Eastern Europe retains national
standards
Although the eight new Eastern European members of the European Union will eventually adopt EU standards, there are still national test marks which are essential to successful business activities.
In May 2004, eight Eastern European countries joined the European Union According to Initiative, a magazine published by the German-British Chamber of Industry and Commerce, previous members are expected to profit from the reforming spirit of these countries

Recently, a survey, commissioned by the Engineering Employers' Federation, found that 40% of UK engineering organisations are considering investment in Eastern Europe.
When investing in these countries, it is essential to understand the necessary testing and certification requirements because, even though these countries have joined the EU (and sooner or later all European regulations will be implemented), there are and will always be national test marks which are essential to successful business activities.
In Poland for example, the B-mark has become a voluntary test mark since entry into the EU.
However, it is very well known and established, it is therefore, vital for entering the Polish market, as purchasing decisions are frequently based on having this certification.
The Hungarian S- or MEEI-mark, the Czech ESC mark, the Slovak EVPU-mark and the Slovenian SIQ-mark are further examples of test marks that could determine the success or failure of a foreign investment.
