The RoboStir System, purchased by TWI from Friction Stir Link in Waukesha, USA, combines powerful friction stir welding technology with the flexibility of a robot.

When it comes to leading the way in welding research and development, TWI is a past master, and by significant investment in its Yorkshire Technology Centre, this trend is set to continue Already, the centre runs one of the most powerful research and development friction stir welding (FSW) machine in the world, and a second machine is used for the development of procedures for welding materials not previously processed by this technique

The latest acquisition by the centre adds a new dimension to the company's capabilities.

The RoboStir System, purchased from Friction Stir Link in Waukesha, USA, combines powerful friction stir welding technology with the flexibility of a robot.

This advanced welding system will provide the opportunity for TWI to develop further 3D welding techniques and applications, and also friction stir spot welding as an alternative to resistance welding.

Delivery of the equipment is expected in spring 2006 and it will be installed in TWI's new facility at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in South Yorkshire.

The addition of this machine will create a suite of FSW equipment unrivalled in the world and this, coupled with the wealth of knowledge of FSW at TWI, will create a centre of excellence in this exciting technology.

This will present benefits to TWI member companies by offering the opportunity to explore friction stir welding as an alternative joining process for a more diverse range of applications.

Indeed, the company is expecting increased interest from customers throughout the world, in the same way that previous advancements in FSW technology by TWI has.
