Getting Animated about friction stir welding
A new stage in the development of friction stir welding has been marked by the arrival of the RoboStir robotic friction stir welding equipment at TWI's Yorkshire Technology Centre.
Trials show a better way to weld
A Leeds based manufacturer of solar assisted heat pump systems has improved quality and examined the potential to cut costs by using innovative welding technology.
Vibration company changes manufacturing methods
TWI's high force friction stir welding (FSW) machine has aided LDS' production of large vibration testing tables
The technology centre houses materials processing facilities including what is claimed to be the most powerful friction stir welding machine in the world, with the capability for welding 75mm thick aluminium in a single pass.
There is also a high concentricity friction stir machine to develop techniques for welding high melting point metals such as steel, which have not previously been welded with this technique.
Laser direct metal deposition facilities are used to build up features on metal surfaces.
And a robotic manipulated fibre laser provides materials processing capabilities.
The company plans to expand the range of equipment available at the centre with an order already placed for a robotic friction stir welder.
Investment in further metal powder processing equipment is also possible.
The opening of the facility comes just under three years after TWI began operating in the region in leased accommodation at Orgreave.
The number of staff has grown to 26 with further recruitment planned.
Colin Walters, who headed the building project for TWI, said: "The opening of this facility is a key stage in the expansion of the company around the world".
"Locating a facility in South Yorkshire was seen as strategically important, and the opportunity that was afforded to us by the development of the Advanced Manufacturing Park was to good to miss".
