Gearbox is crucial to satellite success
The recent successful launch and subsequent solar array deployment of the Eur 2 billion (GBP 1.2 billion) Envisat satellite depended (in part) on a 4in-diameter gearbox.
The gearboxes are supplied by Jackson Power which has been working with the Cemex operations team as part of a review of performance to increase productivity and reduce downtime at the quarry.
Dove Holes produces more than three million tonnes of crushed limestone aggregate per year and has dozens of conveyors, the longest running over a distance of more than 370m.
Each conveyor was originally equipped with a single Radicon worm drive gearbox supplied by David Brown.
The new units in sizes G14 and 15 are replacing 25.4, 30.5 and 35.5cm gearboxes across a power-handling range of 30 to 75kW.
The units have similar ratios but provide efficiency gains of at least 15% in power use.
They are being supplied with modified base plates to enable easy replacement and the positioning of the output shafts is also replicated in the new gearboxes.
The first Series G was installed on the site more than seven years ago and since then there has not been a single oil leak.
