Tyco Electronics has been awarded the wire identification contract for Bombardier's M-7 Passenger Cars Program for Long Island and Metro North, one of the world's largest rail car capital projects

Tyco Electronics has been awarded the wire identification contract for Bombardier's M-7 Passenger Cars Program for Long Island and Metro North - one of the largest rail car capital projects in the world Through the contract, Bombardier became the first customer for Tyco Electronics' new LMS-9000 Heat Shrink Laser Marking System (HLMS), which provides the first solution of its kind for identifying complex wiring systems on rail cars

"The LMS-9000 System represents the first commercial use of laser-engraved heat-shrinkable sleeves and related services in the rail industry, and offers a significant improvement upon the quality, permanence and efficiency of existing sleeve-marking systems," said Gordon Rivers, sales and business development manager for Tyco Electronics.

"Bombardier wanted a superior ID marking sleeve for this ambitious project, and we are very pleased they selected ours".

The LMS-9000 System prints Tyco HSLM markers, which are heat shrinkable polyolefin tubing markers presented on a carrier system and printed in specific sequences.

By utilizing a laser system to print on the plastic sleeves, the LMS-9000 System offers a quantum leap forward in marking quality over other methods currently in use, such as thermal transfer, dot matrix or hot stamp printing.

The laser-engraved markers withstand solvents, temperature, and extreme wear-and-tear, and are very well suited to high-stress environments, such as those found on rail rolling stock.

The LMS-9000 system that Bombardier is installing at its production site features a completely automated engraving process that is easily integrated with other automated manufacturing systems.

Other benefits include reduced waste, greater manufacturing speed and an extended product service life.

As an added service, Tyco Electronics also provides a quick turnaround preprint service to supplies Bombardier subcontractors with the HSLM markers they need.

The preprint service accepts e-mailed data files and delivers pre-kitted marker sets back to the subcontractors, thus ensuring product consistency across the contract.

The system is the result of a great deal of research on best methods by Tyco Electronics.

"This total system offers significant advantages, including increased durability under the harshest conditions, as well as savings in time and labour costs for a main contractor or subcontractor making complex wiring systems," Rivers said. "We expect sales to grow dramatically in the years ahead as we reach out to more customers who require lasting sleeve identification for harsh environments.".
