Courses show way to safe use of abrasives
Abrasive producer introduces training courses to support its customers in applying best practices when using bonded abrasives.
Recent times have seen a considerable change in legislation concerning the safe manufacture and use of bonded abrasive tools.
Previously, the industry considered it sufficient that personnel who were expected to handle and use abrasive equipment attended a basic, general training course.
With rapid technological development of both machine tools and abrasive products, and with a heightened awareness of issues relating to health and safety, legislation is increasing the burden of responsibility on manufacturers and users alike.
The need for risk analysis of existing processes and for assessment of competence levels among employees using abrasive tools has never been greater.
Against this background, the UK subsidiary of abrasive producer Tyrolit has introduced a range of training courses to support its customers in applying best practices when using bonded abrasives.
The modules include: general abrasive product safety awareness; general abrasive wheel mounting and use; specialised abrasive wheel mounting and use; application-specific courses for the main industrial sectors; and specialised modules on dressing, coolant delivery, form loss, thermal damage, plus other topics on request.
As a member of the British Abrasive Federation and the Organisation for the Safety of Abrasives (OSA), Tyrolit tries to increase safety awareness and training within its customer base.
With the introduction of the courses, the company is pioneering a holistic approach towards supporting its industrial customers so that tailored combinations of abrasive products, applications engineering and training can help users reduce costs, implement the latest technology and remain competitive in their markets.
Recent examples of successful implementation of this approach can be found at Ford Motor on camshaft grinding with CBN, at NSK Bearings on track grinding with AlOx, and within the Doncasters Group for grinding gas turbine components with porous AlOx.
