The importance of lean design in reducing the time it takes to get new and upgraded products to market was the theme of a business breakfast and workshop for Kent manufacturing and engineering companies held by the University of Greenwich at Medway and Business Link.

Samantha Berkauer, of the University of Greenwich School of Engineering, outlined the role time-saving, streamlined lean design can play in supporting lean manufacturing processes while David Lanckmans, of Delphi Diesel Systems, explored the approaches required to bring new designs into rapid production.

Dr Raj Bhatti focused on the ability of the School of Engineering to assist local businesses by taking complex engineering designs and creating sold three-dimensional models within 72 hours.

Colin Wilson, School of Engineering Academic Enterprise Manager says: "To remain competitive, engineering and manufacturing companies are having to get new designs to market much faster".

"It used to take at least four years to design and introduce a new car".

"It now needs to be done in less than 18 months".

"Lean design processes cut down the waiting time before models can be agreed".

"The new modelling technology now available at the School of Engineering means that we can take a complex design from a computer and produce a solid prototype in less than three days".

"We are currently working with a number of Kent engineering companies to speed up their design and prototype processes and we are developing new applications beyond the engineering and manufacturing sectors".

"For example, we are currently investigating how this technology can be used to reduce the time and cost involved in the creation of architectural models".

"There are also opportunities to turn our one-off prototype models into lost-wax castings".

The Business Link breakfast was a Good Practice Event for manufacturing businesses across the county.
