Linear bearings - from Pyramids to Levitation
A survey of linear bearings "From the Pyramids to Magnetic Levitation" by H G Stevens Chairman, Unimatic Engineers Ltd.
As the loading balls have point contact with the shaft, the permissible load is small but rolling movement with minimum friction resistance and smooth movement with high accuracy are obtained.
Unimatic's new linear bushes are ideal for computing peripheral equipment, precision equipment such as automatic recorders and digital three-dimensional measuring equipment, and sliding parts of industrial machines such as multi-spindle boring machines, punch presses, tool grinders, automatic gas cutters, printing machines, card selection machines, food packing machines and so on.
The shaft and ball raceways are shaped cylindrically while loading balls are guided in an axial direction by integral retainers.
The outer sleeve comprises high carbon chromium bearing steel while heat treatment and grinding are used for the inner circumference.
A wide variety of linear bushes is available in the range encompassing metric units favoured by Far Eastern and European manufacturers.
Models available include standard, open and cleared adjustment types, circular and square flanged units and a long bodied version.
These are complemented by a range of linear bush housing units, shaft supports and a complete slide assembly, featuring an aluminium case, hardened shafts and aluminium supports.
Also included in the range is Superball, a new standard in linear motion bearings.
Superball has three times the load capacity of the standard type with travel life 27 times as long as the standard linear bush.
Capable of self alignment, Superball can be installed far more quickly and features prolonged life thanks to reduced friction.
Superball can be designed into a broad range of applications such as factory automation equipment, industrial machines, electrical equipment and measuring instruments.
With Unimatic's Superball, users can benefit from increased travel speed, smooth running, reduced costs and improved performance. Request a free brochure from Unimatic Engineers ...
