Linear bearings - from Pyramids to Levitation
A survey of linear bearings "From the Pyramids to Magnetic Levitation" by H G Stevens Chairman, Unimatic Engineers Ltd.
The benefits afforded by the precision finished shafts extends the range of application of these linear bearings, offering a cost-effective solution to a variety of linear motion systems for light to medium loads.
Meeting the needs of high speed, linear applications, shafts up to 7.5m long are available in one piece or cut to length.
For lengths greater than 7.5m, precision jointed shafts can be supplied.
Shafts are available in 20 diameters from 5 to 100mm.
The superfinish is to 0.3micronRa, shaft hardness is HRC-62+/-2, and tolerances for diameter and roundness are h6.
Standard straightness is 0.1mm/m, with greater straightness options available on request.
Continuous support is a further option, with shaft supports available in four light alloys.
Shaft end-mounting blocks can also be supplied, along with pre-drilled shafts.
Matching ball bushings are also available.
Shaft ends can also be machined to customer specifications, for example to provide chamfered edges, grooves, trunions, internal or external threads, or indeed any machine specification that customers can draw.
Shafts with simple machining can generally be shipped within 24 hours.
Typical areas of application for the superfinished linear bearing shafts would include: * Vertical linear guides in applications ranging from medical equipment to power presses * Linear bearings in the plastics, textile, printing, woodworking, packaging and machine tool industries * Foundry machinery * Food processing applications * Gauging and measuring equipment * Welding and induction hardening systems * General mechanical handling applications Unimatic has produced a highly informative, illustrated brochure on these new products, giving additional data on shaft hardness, depth of hardened zone and expected life, as well as a series of technical recommendations regarding shaft bending loads and types of installation.
