Linear bearings - from Pyramids to Levitation
A survey of linear bearings "From the Pyramids to Magnetic Levitation" by H G Stevens Chairman, Unimatic Engineers Ltd.
These remarkable tiny, ultra-flat motors have extensive applications as direct drives in scanners and ventilators or, via gear systems, in micro-pumps or high precision positioning systems in the medical, aerospace, automation, IT and entertainment industries.
In addition, actuator systems, based on the flat Penny Motor design, are also available.
The manufacture of Penny-Motors involves leading edge technology in every respect, from the cutting of all components to æm tolerances, high-precision non-friction bearings, high-performance neodymium-iron-boron permanent magnets, 'printed' motor windings and final assembly under clean-room conditions.

Controller helps form-in-place gasketing machines
Unimatic's versatile SM400 controller is being used in the latest generation of "form-in-place" gasketing machines from RFI Shielding.
The technique of producing the windings of the Penny-Motors by a photolithographic process, analogous to the production of semiconductors, allows the production of extremely flat motors.
The eight-pole brushless motors are also of very low weight, have no magnetic quiescent point because of the air-core coil and are very efficient, having exceedingly low eddy-current or hysteresis losses.
Motors are available for a wide range of voltages and, depending on the design and drive, can be used as frequency controlled synchronous, load-controlled asynchronous or self-commutated electronic motors.
Unimatic also supplies the specialist drives for the control of Penny-Motors.
For externally commutated motors, the drive provides an electronically generated rotary field with high precision speed control over the entire speed range.
For self-commutated motors, control is by magnetic Hall-effect field sensors capable of determining the actual rotor position very accurately at any time.
For each and every application, Unimatic will advise on the selection of the most appropriate motor/drive combination.
Systems are available 'tailor-made' with hollow shafts, extended shafts, modified shaft diameters, connectors and variations designed for specific applications.
Standard models have a maximum speed of 20,000rev/min, but special models can be produced for 60,000 or even 150,000rev/min.
The offer is completed with a broad range of precision gearboxes - planetary, micro-harmonic drive or helical gears.
In each case, high torque at the lowest volume is the result, with the incredibly low backlash prestressed gear types being ideal for positioning tasks.
The gearboxes can be directly combined as one housing with the Penny-Motors. Request a free brochure from Unimatic Engineers ...
