Linear bearings - from Pyramids to Levitation
A survey of linear bearings "From the Pyramids to Magnetic Levitation" by H G Stevens Chairman, Unimatic Engineers Ltd.
Made in Florida by Spyraflo, possibly the most innovative bearings company in the world, these premounted self-aligning bearings feature high-density housings manufactured in sintered aluminium to ensure consistent dimensional quality.
Options for the bearing include Oilite bronze, Teflon impregnated bronze and needle roller bearings, all of which benefit from the low cost, lightweight design offered by Spyraflo.
The Oilite bronze option incorporates a bearing insert that meets SAE-840 specification, including 25% oil content.
The manufacturing method used ensures that there is no oil carborisation present.
High-performance Teflon impregnated bronze and needle roller bearings are a viable lower cost, lighter weight option to pillow-block self-align ball bearings.
For applications in the food, packaging and dairy industries, the Oilite bronze bearing is available in a 303 Stainless Steel housing mounted in a pillow-block or housing-flange with a hard-anodised finish.
Unimatic and Spyraflo have a long standing association, with the former able to apply its recognised engineering expertise to help users develop innovative machine and systems design solutions using the Spyraflo bearings alongside a wide range of other precision, motion and mechatronic components.
