Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 19, 2007

Over 100 members of the Welsh Mechatronics Network attended the event and were able to gain an insight into the development of the Airbus family of aircraft.

Models of the world's largest passenger plane and videos of its test flight provided delegates from the Welsh Mechatronics Network with a glimpse of how Airbus is developing its state of the art technology at a lecture held at the University of Wales, Newport.

Guest speaker at the network's Spring Prestige Lecture was Colin Mitchell, the Chief Manufacturing Engineer responsible for the development and application of new technology at Airbus, one of the leaders in the civil aircraft industry.

"Over 100 members of the Welsh Mechatronics Network attended the event and were able to gain an insight into the development of the Airbus family of aircraft including the new A380, the world's largest passenger plane", said Ann Gunther, Mechatronics Administrator at the University.

"Airbus has established itself as the global leader in civil aircraft manufacture and their products are renowned for their high level of technology".

"The industry is facing significant technical challenges to meet market and environmental drivers and the presentation gave delegates an overview of how Airbus is meeting these manufacturing challenges of the A380".

Commenting on the success of the evening, Lee Jenkins, Business Development Manager at the department of Enterprise and Research Services, said, "University events such as the Prestige Lecture are fast becoming a popular way for companies of all sizes to gain new information and keep up to date with industry developments whilst establishing new contacts".

"The Welsh Mechatronics Network in particular plays a key role in putting Welsh SMEs in touch with each other to help solve problems and promote collaborative working", he added.

"Membership of the network is free to all companies based in Wales and associates are able to benefit from free advice and events should they operate within the industry.
