A Swede is at the heart of another UK British Football championship: but it is not Sven Goran Eriksson - this time it is Swedish student Jarl Cornell and the footballers are all robots.

Cornell, who is from Stockholm, is the only non-British member of the University of Warwick's Robot Football Team - a team of up 4th year students from the University of Warwick's Department of Engineering.

On the 21st and 22nd of March this year the University of Warwick will be hosting the Robot Football Championships for Britain and Ireland.

In the championship two teams of either three or five autonomous robots compete against each other to score the most goals in the allocated time.

The robots are electronically driven and controlled by a central computer.

The robot movements are detected by a camera, and a computer program tells the robots where to move to.

This information is transmitted via radio frequency or blue tooth technology to the robots.

The competition will take place in the International Manufacturing Centre (IMC) building on the University of Warwick Campus on 21st and 22nd March 2005.

The University of Warwick team has received sponsorship from Accenture the global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company, the IMechE, Denso, The Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) at the University of Warwick and the University of Warwick's 40th Anniversary celebration fund.
