Eight competitors from the team that represented the UK at the WorldSkills Competition in 2003 in the engineering trade, have been awarded the Licentiateship of City and Guilds.

Eight competitors from the team that represented the UK at the WorldSkills Competition in 2003 in the engineering trade, have been awarded the Licentiateship of City and Guilds.

The young people competed in trades as diverse as mechatronics and welding, mechanical systems and industrial electronics and joined 13 other members of the UK team being given the award on Saturday 15th May 2004 at the Senior Awards graduation ceremony held at the Merchant Taylor's Hall in central London.

Their awards are a testimony to the hard work and training they went through whilst working towards the LCGI and reward the commitment they showed in aiming to become some of the world's finest engineers.

The Licentiateship qualification, the first level of City and Guilds' Senior Awards, requires a similar level of competence to NVQ level 4 and recognises personal achievement and application of professional knowledge in the workplace.

UK Skills, the organisation which trains the UK WorldSkills team, was given delegated authority to award the Licentiateship last June.

Members of the UK team who successfully completed a 6-month training programme leading up to the WorldSkills competition have received the award.

The programme was specifically designed to include the rigorous assessment procedure needed to achieve LCGI status.

Chris Humphries, Director General of City and Guilds and Chairman of UK Skills said: "I was proud to take these highly skilled young people to the WorldSkills Competition in my capacity as Chairman of UK Skills in 2003".

"They trained intensively for six months in order to prepare themselves for the mammoth challenge that lay ahead and returned triumphant with two golds, two bronzes and nine international diplomas of excellence".

"30 of the WorldSkills competitors achieved the LCGI standard and 21 of them are here today".

"They have all risen to the challenge and shown themselves to be exceptionally skilled and talented".

"I am thrilled to be here with them to celebrate their success".
