The best of the UK's engineering sector are being called to enter the 2007 SkillENG competitions, as the deadline for this year's applications has been officially declared Ambitious industrial technicians, electricians and welders in employment, training or education have until the 16th of March 2007 to register if they wish to take part

Competitions in aircraft maintenance, CNC milling, CNC turning, industrial control, industrial electronics, mechatronics and welding are being organised this year.

They aim to test the technical aptitudes of participants, who must work to a brief within an allotted time scale.

Skills competitions offer budding engineering professionals the opportunity to have their talents recognised and to benchmark their abilities against their peers.

National winners from this year's competitions may be selected to represent the UK at the 2009 WorldSkills competition, taking place in Calgary, Canada.

WorldSkills is the largest skills event on the planet, and consists of a four-day competition where 48 countries meet and compete in 40 different skills, ranging from cabinet making to web design.

Robin Saxby, President of the Institute of Engineering Technology is looking forward to this year's competitions.

He says "In an increasingly globally competitive labour market, it is important for engineers to be able to measure their abilities against others, and to differentiate themselves as outstanding performers in the eyes of employers internationally".

"These competitions provide engineers with an opportunity to achieve this, and I am sure we will see some exceptional demonstrations of skill in 2007".

SkillENG is a committee dedicated to celebrating the abilities of engineering professionals in the UK through a system of regional and national competitions, and by selecting and training engineering competitors for the WorldSkills Competition.

It is supported by the Department for Education and Skills through UK Skills, a not-for-profit organisation that exists to establish and sustain skills competitions throughout the UK.
