A chemical engineering student at the University of Surrey has won the Worshipful Company of Engineers' Cadzow Smith Engineering Award 2004 for a student on a full-time course.

Suzanne Johnson, final year chemical engineering student at the University of Surrey, has won the Worshipful Company of Engineers' Cadzow Smith Engineering Award 2004 for a student on a full-time course The award is made annually to a full-time and part-time student who is able to demonstrate that they have the potential to carry forward the tradition of enterprise through engineering

Johnson is set to graduate with a MEng degree with distinction and an Associateship of the university, also with distinction.

Prof Paul Smith, Head of the School of Engineering, said: "We are very proud of Suzanne's latest achievement.

She is an exceptional student and on course to graduate with the highest overall mark by any student in the last 20 years".

Since joining the university, Johnson has displayed an innate ability to both lead and to represent the interests of student groups.

She represented her year group on the Board of Undergraduate Studies and was President of the Chemical Engineering Society.

During her second year she excelled on the leadership programmes.

She gained professional experience during three industrial placements at BP, Sucromiles (part owned by Tate and Lyle) and AstraZeneca.

She will join Foster Wheeler in Reading after graduating.

Johnson feels passionate about the image of engineering amongst students: "Students don't choose engineering careers because they don't know what it is or they think it involves working in a factory.

Engineering is the link between the scientific invention and getting the products or inventions to people.

One of my long term goals is to help people make this connection".

Johnson received a prize cheque of GBP 1500 and will attend the Installation and Awards Livery Dinner on 27th April when her medal and certificate will be awarded.
