IEEE President elect to speak in Bath

Professor Art Winston, President-elect of the IEEE, will be delivering his only lecture during his visit to the UK at the University of Bath this Friday.

Professor Art Winston, President-elect of the IEEE, the world's largest technical society, will be delivering his only lecture during his visit to the UK at the University of Bath this Friday (28th March 2003).

An entertaining and stimulating speaker, he will be giving his thoughts on engineering, education and technology.

The lecture, "Advancing global prosperity in the 21st century: the role of professional societies", will address the role of technical professional societies and will emphasise the work done by the IEEE to foster technological innovation and help members develop their careers.

The importance of sharing knowledge through conferences, publications, online communities and local meetings will be discussed.

Consideration will be given to the role societies must play to cultivate interest in the profession in order to ensure there is an available, well-trained workforce.

Professor Winston has had extensive experience in industry and as a senior faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He is head of the Gordon Institute at Tufts University in the United States, a premier, privately funded Graduate School dedicated to the education of engineering leaders.

He will take office as President of the IEEE in 2004.

The lecture will take place in 8West, 1.1 at 1615.
