Two senior academics at the University of Bath have been elected Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Two senior academics at the University of Bath have been elected Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Professor Kevin Edge, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Professor Paul Cannon, Professor of Communications Systems and Atmospheric Research in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, have both become Fellows of the Royal Academy.

They are among 50 new Fellows elected by the Royal Academy, which brings together the UK's most eminent engineers from all engineering disciplines.

The Royal Academy praised Professor Edge's outstanding and internationally recognised contributions to understanding the factors responsible for noise generated by hydraulic machines and systems.

It also recognises the importance of his work in the design of quieter components and systems.

Professor Edge, who takes up a new role as the University of Bath's Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research in August, said: "It is a great honour to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy and I am looking forward to taking part in its activities".

Professor Edge is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Chair of the Institution's Mechatronics, Informatics and Control Group and a member of the IMechE Council.

He has published more than 120 papers on various aspects of fluid power systems and control, and has been awarded a number of prizes by IMechE.

The Royal Academy praised Professor Cannon's innovative research in the field of radio propagation through the ionosphere.

In particular he has developed measurement and modelling techniques to characterise the ionospheric medium in real time.

The academy also noted the contribution he makes in his field, both nationally and internationally.

Professor Cannon is also Technical Director of the Communications Department at QinetiQ, Europe's largest science and technology organisation.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and a member of the Council for the next session.

He has published extensively in journals and conferences, giving invited papers at a number of meetings and winning the IEE's Marconi Premium award in 1989.

He is currently a Commission Deputy Chairman of the International Union of Radio Science.
