A team of engineering students who have just graduated from the University of Bath are aiming to beat the Aussies in their own back yard when they compete in the Australian Formula Student 2003 event.

The team finished sixth overall in the recent Institute of Mechanical Engineers' Formula Student event - the highest overall placing yet achieved by a University of Bath team in the competition and the second highest placed UK team in this year's event.

The students built their single-seat racing car, BURT03 (Bath University Racing Team), as part of their automotive engineering course at the university.

The car's innovative design features have already attracted the attention of the motor racing world - BURT03 was recently featured on ITV's Formula 1 programme.

After a successful Formula Student competition that saw them win skidpan handling event and an award for their presentation about the car, the team are now planning to make the long trek "down under" to compete in the Australian version of Formula Student in Adelaide at the beginning of December.

"This is a great opportunity to showcase the talents of the British motorsport industry", said team member Phil Hiscutt.

"We have an exceptionally good car that was designed and built by students as part of their automotive engineering course at the University of Bath".

"We want to go to Australia and show people just how good the car is", he added.

"Needless to say, taking a team and the car all the way to Australia will be quite expensive, so we're hoping some more sponsors will come on board to help us out".

"We're particularly keen to find sponsors who could help us out with the cost of getting the team and the car out to Australia", added Hiscutt.

BURT03 features a revolutionary hydraulic all-wheel drive system that transfers energy from the rear wheels to the front wheels when it senses that the rear wheels are spinning - an innovation that could have far-reaching implications for a wide range of motorsport disciplines.

This system has been tested successfully, but was not used in the UK event, held at the Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground in Leicestershire, due to some mid-corner understeer.

It is now being further developed for Adelaide.

The car also features a lightweight chassis and electronic gearshift, making acceleration incredibly fast.

BURT03 is powered by a 599cm3 turbocharged 97bhp engine capable of propelling it from 0 to 100km/h in well under 4s.

The Formula Student competitions test a wide range of technological attributes, including acceleration, endurance, braking and handling.

BURT03's existing sponsors include Castrol, KPMG, Perkins Engines Co, Greene Tweed and Parker.
