National role for Vice-Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bradford, Professor Chris Taylor, has been elected President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bradford, Professor Chris Taylor, has been elected President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) The election was made at the 156th Annual Meeting of the MechE, making Prof Taylor the 118th President of the institution

The appointment is in recognition of his long and distinguished engineering career, both in industry and academia, and his support and encouragement for the mechanical engineering profession.

At the ordinary meeting which followed his election, Prof Taylor presented his presidential address entitled "Times of change".

He said: "I am committed to promoting the Institution to the world at large and to supporting the membership in particular.

The IMechE will continue its involvement in UK engineering, and exert its influence, thereby remaining a leading force in this fast changing environment".

Prof Taylor was educated at Leeds Boys Modern School, Kings College University (where he read mechanical engineering) and the University of Leeds (for his masters and doctoral degrees).

His first post was as a Research Engineer with the English Electric Company, before moving to the Industrial Unit of Tribology at Leeds University.

He joined the academic staff at the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bradford in 1971, before taking up his current position as Vice-Chancellor and Principal in 2001.

Professor Taylor has been active in the IMechE for some 30 years, having served as chair of the Tribology Group (1986-1989), and as a member of the Technical Policy Board (1986-1989) and Research Committee (1991-1996).

He also chaired the Mechanical Sciences and Technologies Division (1996-1998), the Professional Development Board (1998-2002) and the Professional Engineering Publishing Board (2002-2003).

His service on Council dates from 1996 and he has been a member of the institution's Trustee Board since 2002.
