Four first year students were recently awarded prestigious scholarships in recognition of their academic achievements.

Four first year students from the University of Bradford were each recently awarded a prestigious scholarship in recognition of their academic achievements.

The students, from the University's School of Engineering, Design and Technology, have been awarded the Benjamin Jowett Memorial Scholarship on merit and their entry grades to the university.

Nkosilathi Ncube, Michael Reading, Ben Smailes and Michael Warren, who are all studying for automotive-based degrees at the university, were each presented with a certificate and a GBP 500 cheque by Jenny Reavill and Constance Jowett of the Jowett family.

Dean of the School of Engineering, Design and Technology, Prof Andrew Day said: "The late Benjamin Jowett cofounded the Jowett Car company in Bradford in 1901 - Bradford's only major car manufacturer".

"His daughter Marjorie Illingworth set up the scholarships to perpetuate the memory of her father and to acknowledge the contribution the Jowett family made to both the industrial history of Bradford and to the automobile industry.

We are grateful that he has given us the award, which recognises the achievements of students studying for a degree in the field".
