The University of Bradford has joined a Government-backed programme set up to help manufacturers solve real life business problems.

The Department of Trade and Industry's Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) has named the University's School of Engineering, Design and Technology as a Centre of Expertise for Manufacturing (CEM).

The University's CEM will offer knowhow and expertise in a wide range of areas including automotive engineering, computer aided design and biomedical engineering.

School business associate Jonathan Philby said: "We are delighted to have been accepted as a Centre of Expertise for Manufacturing".

"The manufacturing industry is all about coming up with practical solutions to problems".

"Being a CEM puts us in a great position to use our expertise to solve those problems and help local businesses to become more successful".

In return for its time and expertise, the university receives a fee from businesses, who in turn can often claim grants from MAS to help pay for the work.

Businesses will contact the university's CEM through the Government's Yorkshire and Humber MAS.

MAS offer eligible businesses a range of services, including free advice and grants to help Director of the Yorkshire and Humber MAS, which is managed by Yorkshire Company Services, Robin Watson, said: "The University of Bradford's CEM status adds significant value to this region's Manufacturing Advisory Service".

"It has often been difficult for small manufacturing businesses to access the high value expertise available within universities".

"However, with the University achieving its CEM status, businesses can now benefit from the best advice and support available at a reduced cost".
