A new generation of ski equipment could be on the cards thanks to a successful partnership between the University of Bradford and Briton Engineering.

A new generation of ski equipment could be on the cards thanks to a successful partnership between the University of Bradford and Briton Engineering.

Briton Engineering, a small company near Holmfirth, is involved in the design, civil engineering, mechanical, and electrical installation of Snowflex ski surface, ski lifts and other sport-related equipment.

Briton has been working with the University of Bradford since 2002 using the Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) programme to raise the profile of the Snowflex product by developing a marketing strategy.

The strategy aims to keep the company at the leading edge in the snow sports and related product market.

The successful completion of this project is now paying dividends.

Due to the success of the first KTP, the company is continuing to work with the University and recently recruited a second associate to undertake a second project, which will last two and a half years.

An associate is employed by the university to work on a KTP project.

He or she works inside the company, with the possibility that the company will employ them at the end of that period.

This one is a technical project that will focus on the investigation, development and testing of new materials for the Snowflex product.

The company is confident that by the end of the project, it will have a new generation of Snowflex material.

Briton and Snowflex now have a much higher media profile - the company and the product have been featured on the Canadian Discovery Channel.

More contacts have been made and more orders are coming through for this revolutionary artificial ski surface.

The University of Bradford project is one of ten ongoing KTPs at the university, and the success of these partnerships has led to the university's research and knowledge transfer support being formally awarded "KTP Office" status by the Department of Trade and Industry.

The university aims to establish a further eight KTP projects this academic year.
