School pupils to build a hovercraft in a day

An University of Bradford product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Apr 28, 2005

School pupils from across North Bradford will descend on Grange College of Technology to design and build a hovercraft in a day as part of a programme run by the University of Bradford.

Around 80 school pupils from across North Bradford will descend on Grange College of Technology to design and build a hovercraft in one day as part of a technological outreach programme run by the University of Bradford.

This audacious project is being organised by the University's School of Engineering, Design and Technology as part of a programme for schools in conjunction with the Northern Aerospace Technology Exploitation Centre (NATEC).

Year 10 pupils (14- and 15-year-olds) from Grange, Queensbury, Hanson and Carlton Bolling schools will be taking part in the event in the main hall of Grange College of Technology on Friday 29th April 2005.

The students will work in teams to design, build and test their own mini-hovercraft using foam board, plastic skirting and adhesive tape following instructions given to them at the start of the day by staff and students from the university.

At the end of their day's work, the pupils will get to see whose design works the best when each team will have to race each other's hovercraft.

Didge Chavda, a technician from the University's School of Engineering, Design and Technology will be one of the members of staff helping the pupils.

He said: "This project is a fun opportunity to learn more about a career in engineering and aerospace as well as giving participants the chance to gain hands-on experience of designing and building".

"We ran this project last year but for girls only as part of our Women In Science and Engineering campaign".

"This year we have invited the boys to join in so we will be watching closely to see who wins the battle of the sexes in terms of designing and building a hovercraft".
