Five students from the University of Bradford's School of Engineering, Design and Technology will be awarded the prestigious Benjamin Jowett Memorial Scholarship this week.

The five students are, in no particular order: Simon Wong, age 22, studying mechanical engineering from Bradford, West Yorkshire; Toran Thapa, age 20, studying mechanical and automotive engineering from Kathmandu, Nepal; Will Steward, age 18, studying mechanical engineering from Lowestoft, Suffolk; Kristofer Larsen, age 19, studying mechanical engineering from Radcliffe-on-Trent, Nottingham; and Fady Nagy Labib Hanna, age 18, studying mechanical engineering from Cairo, Egypt.

A presentation will take place at 1330 BST in the transport gallery at the Bradford Industrial Museum on Tuesday 17th May 2005 where the students will each be presented with a GBP 500 cheque by one of the surviving relatives of the Jowett family, Constance Jowett.

The late Benjamin Jowett cofounded the Jowett Car Company in Bradford in 1901 - Bradford's only major car manufacturer.

His daughter Marjorie Illingworth set up the scholarship scheme to perpetuate the memory of her father and to acknowledge the contribution the Jowett family made to both the industrial history of Bradford and to the automobile industry.

The Jowett Scholarships support students on mechanical and automotive engineering degree courses, with up to seven scholarships awarded each year to students for academic excellence on admission to the first year of their undergraduate studies.

Dean of the School of Engineering, Design and Technology at the University of Bradford, Professor Andrew Day, said: "I am delighted to announce this year's batch of Jowett Scholarships for some of our brightest stars in engineering at the University of Bradford".

"We are very grateful to the Jowett family for their continued support to the education of engineering which enables us to recognises the achievements of our degree students".
