Students at the University of Bradford will this week unveil their designs for a new kind of pram that will ease the lives of parents flying with young children.

Judges will be deciding which of the six teams of second and third year design students will by carrying off the GBP 1000 first prize as part of the department's industrial design competition on Friday 26th May 2006.

The students' brief is to design a pram that can be carried onto an aircraft as hand luggage.

The pram must be able to open and close using one hand leaving a parent to hold the baby in their free hand.

There are six teams of six students taking part in the competition which is taking place in the University's School of Engineering, Design and Technology as part of a departmental open day during the morning of Friday 26th May.

The winning team will collect a GBP 1000 prize and the runners up will collect GBP 400.

The competition is sponsored by the Manchester-based business finance company Able2Buy on behalf of baby carrier retailer Silvercross.

The company will also be providing professional staff to help judge the students' designs, alongside members of the recently expanded design team within the University's School of Engineering, Design and Technology.

Dr George Rosala, Design Programme Director in the School of Engineering, Design and Technology, said: "We have tasked the students with a very practical conundrum and one which could provide some comfort to people travelling with infants on aeroplanes".

"We have some very talented students on our design courses and we're hoping that the winning design might be developed for production".

"I'd invite anybody considering industrial design as a career or course option to come and join us for the judging".

"Amongst our judges we have new lecturers who have just joined our growing design team".

"This school has always been seen as strong for engineering, but over recent years it has expanded its horizons by introducing design and has made major investments by recruiting some top designers in the field".
