Conference planned for female engineers

A seminar for women in science, engineering and technology will take place at the University of Bradford this Friday, 25th May, 2007.
Women will be given advice on how to stand tall and make their presence known in the predominantly male profession of engineering this week, in a seminar for women in science, engineering, technology (SET), which will take place at the University of Bradford this Friday, 25th May, 2007.
Over the past 12 months the School of Engineering, Design and Technology (EDT) at the University has been involved in a project to set up ARNWESS (A Regional Network of Women's Engineering Student Societies) at Universities and colleges across Yorkshire and Humber.
The women involved in ARNWESS will join students from the School of Engineering, Design and Technology at the seminar where Dr Emma Harris will give a presentation entitled "handbags and hydraulics".
Dr Harris graduated from the University in 1994 with a degree in Civil Engineering and has fifteen years experience of working in water management including coastal, riverine and pipe networks.
She is a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Water Board and is panel chair and honorary editor of the Proceedings of ICE, Water Management.
She is the first woman editor of any of the ICE journals.
The seminar will also include a lecture from Rita Morris, former BBC singer and professional opera singer.
She will talk to the women about "standing their ground in a man's world".
Rita is an trainer and a graduate of The Royal Academy of Music.
She has over 25 years experience in broadcasting, programme-designing, scriptwriting and lecturing.
As well as enjoying an international career as a concert artist, Rita also had her own television series on BBC1 titled "she shall have music".
Event organiser and External Relations and Marketing Officer for EDT, Joanne Crowther, said: "We are very excited about this event which will bring together women from across Yorkshire who are involved in science and engineering, as students, teachers or lecturers".
"We want the network to continue to grow across the county, offering support to all women in SET and Friday's event at the University will be a catalyst for this".
"The event is being held in conjunction with JIVE and the UKRC (United Kingdom Resource Centre)".
