Polyetheramines offer new approach

A Huntsman Advanced Materials product story

A new technology for the coatings, elastomers, sealants and adhesives market is now available from Huntsman Performance Products.

A new technology for the coatings, elastomers, sealants and adhesives market is now available from Huntsman Performance Products, one of the world's largest producers of amine products.

Now the dilemma of modifying the cure speed of polyurea/polyurethane systems, slowing down primary amine reactions and hindering the competing reaction between water and hydroxyl groups, can be solved by using the new high content secondary aliphatic polyetheramines.

The XTJ-584, XTJ-585, XTJ-586 and the XTJ-576 aliphatic di- and tri-polyetheramines with little primary or tertiary amines, are the newest developments of the speciality amine products available from Huntsman Performance Products.

They are liquid polyetheramines with each amine being secondary in nature.

The secondary amine functional groups provide a much slower reaction compared with primary amines.

They may be used in conjunction with, or to partially replace existing aromatic chain extenders to improve flexibility, colour, and leading to a reduction of the cost of the formulation.

As low viscosity liquids, these new secondary aliphatic diamines and triamines allow the efficient formation of much lower viscosity isocyanate prepolymers with properties equivalent of primary polyetheramines or polyols.

The products are stable and there is no off-gassing of reversible blocking agents.

They expand formulation capabilities of aspartic esters and aromatic formulations at a lower cost with equivalent properties.

Secondary aliphatic polyetheramines also allow the formation of high hardness aromatic and aliphatic systems, while maintaining flexibility and good cure speed at a reasonable cost.

When using these amines as reactants, their amine groups, secondary in nature, prevent more than one reaction at each amine site.

This is useful in coatings and polymer applications where they can be used as curing agents, cross-linkers for aromatic and aliphatic polyurea and polyurethane, as cross linking agent in polymers or in the manufacturing of low viscosity aliphatic isocyanate quasi prepolymers.

The polyetheramines range is proprietary to Huntsman.

They bear EINECS (polymers) and TSCA registration; Development quantity samples are available on request.

"Using our unique technological capabilities we have been able to design and therefore provide this new innovative product to fulfill our customers' requirements", said Martin Michiels, Commercial Director for Huntsman Performance Products.
