The Institut fur Verbundwerkstoffe has received the prestigious AVK Innovation Award.

The Institut fur Verbundwerkstoffe (IVW), a German nonprofit research institute that develops potential applications for composite materials based on polymer matrix systems, has received the prestigious AVK Innovation Award The award was presented to Prof AK Schlarb, Dr R Schledjewski and Dipl-Ing (FH) M Passler on behalf of all employees involved in the project during a ceremony at the 9th International AVK Conference at Essen in September 2006

The AVK Innovation Award was given to IVW in recognition of a project undertaken with 30 partners from 15 nations using an advanced resin system from Huntsman Advanced Materials based on Araldite LY 564/Aradur 3486 composite materials for filament winding.

Filament winding is widely used in the production of composite components such as tanks or pipes and consists of winding resin-impregnated fibre or tape on a mandrel surface in a precise geometric pattern, controlled by CNC machines.

Originally developed for applications in the aerospace and defence industries, this versatile technology is now used across a range of industries for the production of convex shaped, strong, yet lightweight components.

Using the new Araldite advanced resin system, IVW was able to improve production efficiency by minimising resin content and improving construction speed due to the low viscosity of the resin.

Dr-Ing Ralf Schledjewski, Group Leader, Manufacturing Science Dept at IVW, said: "The laminated component we produced using the Araldite advanced resin system is part of a major project - StorHy".

"The aim of this project is the production of a hydrogen storage tank for use in the automotive industry".

"By using Araldite LY 564/Aradur XB 3486 composite resins from Huntsman we were able to improve the overall quality of the component by eliminating voids and improve production efficiency generally".

"Also the low viscosity of the Araldite epoxy resin facilitated a shorter curing cycle during the filament winding process".

Dr Schledjewski added: "We are delighted to receive this award, which recognises such a significant advance in filament winding technology".

"The use of Huntsman's advanced resin system enabled us to progress from theory to finished component quickly and efficiently, adding real value to the project".

"This versatile laminating system makes filament winding a viable and attractive technology for all manufacturers".
