Boards and laminating system complete coupe

A Huntsman Advanced Materials product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 28, 2007

The Izana shows the quality of finish that can be achieved on concept models using Huntsman Advanced Materials RenShape styling and modelling boards and the Araldite Laminating Resin system.

The Izana sports coupe is the latest concept car from Sivax, one of Japan's leading design and prototype production companies for the automotive industry.

The four-seater, gull-winged door sports coupe was launched at the Paris Motor Show in October 2006.

The latest model in a series of concept cars developed and built by Sivax at its site in Yokohama, Japan, the streamlined shape highlights the quality of finish that can be achieved on concept models using Huntsman Advanced Materials RenShape styling and modelling boards and the Araldite Laminating Resin system, even with a highly complex aerodynamic design.

"Huntsman Advanced Materials BM 5025 boards and Araldite LY 5052/ Aradur 5052 laminating system proved ideally matched to meet our very demanding standards", said Tomohiro Onuma, Manager for Model Production at the Sivax RandD Centre.

"The boards have excellent mechanical properties - tough and durable, yet lightweight and easy to machine or hand finish to any design refinements with very little waste".

"With the laminating resin system too we were able to achieve an unprecedented level of design and surface quality finish for the Izana models".

RenShape BM 5025 is a low-density styling board with a very good surface structure.

It is lightweight and easy to handle with good machinability.

BM 5025 also offers good heat resistance and is resistant to organic solvents - making it particularly suitable for automotive concept modelling applications.

Araldite LY 5052 / Aradur 5052 is a low-viscosity, cold-curing epoxy system particularly suitable for industrial composites and tooling applications.

Its long pot life (2 hours / 100ml at ambient temperature) makes it ideal for the production of the large components often required for concept vehicles.

"The Izana is one of our most ambitious creations yet - subtly blending Japanese and Western design cultures", said Onuma.

"Huntsman Advanced Materials has played an important part in the success of this project - not only with the versatility and consistently high-quality of the materials they supplied but the technical data and support the Huntsman team provided as well".
