Epoxy resin chosen for securing headset components
Cresilas, which makes models using rapid prototyping, has chosen the Renshape SL 7811 epoxy resin from Huntsman Advanced Materials to secure the parts of a headset using stereolithography technology.
In a matter of hours, stereolithography technology is able to produce models and prototypes by using resin liquid, which is polymerised by an ultraviolet laser.
Objects are created by stacking successive layers one upon the other at an appropriate rate for the creation of the model.
As well as assembling parts, substantiating hinge development and constructing models in full form, it can provide a true rendition of the original design concept.
Cresilas was posed with a significant challenge in taking the design concept of the headset through to the commercialisation phase in a period of one week.
This involved assembling the component parts and finishing the headset to an ABS-like appearance that matched the overall design and functions of the final product, so that the packaging requirements could be realised as quickly as possible.
Elisabeth Rey of Cresilas said: 'With its low viscosity and surface tension, Renshape SL 7811 allowed for even and smooth layers of resin to form across the component parts during the recoating stage.
'Most impressively, it did not leave any bubbles on the surface.
'The parts exiting the machine could be cleaned easily and the sanding finish was easy to perform and therefore much faster as a result.
'This system met every target we set it, from creating aesthetically pleasing, durable white parts with a high-quality appearance to producing an ergonomic headset design that offers great comfort when used frequently and for long periods of time,' she added.
Part of the Renshape SL 7800 range of resins, designed for use on solid-state SLA platforms, the Renshape SL 7811 stereolithography material produces strong white models and prototypes with ABS-like appearance.
The Renshape SL 7800 resins facilitate processing and deliver long-term durability, according to Huntsman.
