Variohm sorts out Lola with position
sensors
Lola Cars International are using position sensors from Variohm Components Limited for suspension monitoring, gearbox control and steering inputs on their latest racecars.

Rotary position sensors are small and rugged
The new Vert X family of sensors not only comes in various housing diameters from 13 to 37mm and offers a number of analogue or digital outputs, they are sealed to IP69K (operational).
Development motorcycle data aided by linear pots
MoTeC have fitted a Ducatto motorcycle with one of their Advanced Dash Logger and Engine Control Units, featuring a number of position sensors supplied by Variohm Components
As would be expected, the working environment is extremely harsh and demanding.
The transducers are subjected to high rates of vibration, water splashing and high rates of carbon fibre dust pollution from the braking systems.
Despite this rough treatment the Variohm units, which incorporate conductive plastic tracks, elastomer damped wipers and double seals, perform without any problems.
When racing, the cars are no easier on the rotary potentiometers which are used as gearbox sensors.
This is another high vibration area but the added complication here is heat, especially when the car is at rest.
Even this hasn't been a problem to the Variohm supplied units as they can withstand such operating extremes, but even more importantly, they have a very high temperature coefficient of under 5ppm provided they are properly used.
The steering sensing application is the kindest as far as the operating environment is concerned.
Lola are using a three-turn potentiometer mounted directly onto the steering column to measure the steering inputs.
Motorsport at this level is obviously a fantastic proving ground for any component but Variohm units have shown themselves to be up to the task in every department.
The same rugged construction and technology is used in Variohm's range of industrial units so users have the same comfort of knowing that the products which they specify are truly 'race proven'!.
