Magnetic position sensor helps cut emissions

A Variohm Eurosensor product story

Exhaust gas recycling system uses a new type of magnetic position sensor developed by Novotechnik of Stuttgart, Germany.

Despite their rather quaint appearance London taxicabs are expected to meet all the current legislation regarding exhaust emissions.

Many of these vehicles are now equipped with an exhaust gas recycling system which uses a new type of magnetic position sensor developed by Novotechnik of Stuttgart, Germany.

The Novotechnik unit, which is designated the model RFC4800, is used to monitor the position of the diesel-injector which is effectively measuring the fuel demand.

The sensor itself is a two part magnetic unit which offers a resolution of 12bit and a linearity (accuracy) of 0.3%.

The two-part construction makes integration of the unit extremely simple.

The output of the sensor is absolute so even if the engine is stopped and restarted the sensor will know exactly where it is at all times.

They are rugged enough to stand up to the harshest of environments and as they do not rely on any form of moving contact vibrations don't wear them out prematurely.

The output from the sensor is fed into a control system which is monitoring fresh air, exhaust gas and fuel demand and recycles some of the exhaust back into the inlet manifold.

The advantage of this is that the fuel mixture burns at a lower temperature and burns more completely so that the exhaust gases contain fewer solids and other impurities.

From the operators point of view the big advantage is that the taxi's useable life is extended without any additional costs for special additives or fuels.

The RFC4800 is only one of the new sensors in the Novotechnik range details of which can be obtained from the UK distributor Variohm Eurosensor.
