Government needs to support vocational training
The Government needs to be more supportive of firms willing to participate in vocational qualifications and training schemes, a West Midlands' engineering company has warned
Roberts developed an interest in engineering relatively late in her career.
At the age of 24 working as a clerical assistant and with no formal technical training, Roberts successfully persuaded the CEO of Yorkshire Electricity to support her re-entry into education.
Roberts is the first non-graduate ever to complete the Yorkshire Electricity graduate scheme.
Now, having completed an ONC and HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Roberts has firmly established herself within Yorkshire Electricity.
In the UK engineering industry it is estimated that a mere 19% of the workforce are qualified female engineers.
Speculation indicates that this is due to poor industry image and stereotypes of engineering as dull in comparison to newer service industries.
Roberts commented, "What I particularly love about engineering is the fact that every day brings a new challenge.
I am honoured to join forces with NER in calling all women interested in engineering to come and enjoy the rare opportunity to meet potential employers face to face and find out what each individual company has on offer.
Engineering is a challenging and exciting career and I would urge anyone with an interest in finding out more about engineering careers to come along to the exhibition".
Key exhibitors at the National Engineering Recruitment Exhibition include: BAE Systems, Balfour Beatty Rail, Alstom Transport Service, BOC Edwards, Carillion Rail, National Air Traffic Services, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Teacher Training Agency, T Mobile, The Technology Partnership, TRW Aeronautical System and Vodafone UK.
