Microwaves help recycler in silo
measurments
Guided microwave devices measure the silo level, even during filling and emptying, regardless of surface angle, build up and vessel obstructions, at major recycling plant.
Linpac Plastic Recycling wanted an easy, cost effective way of measuring and distributing accurate silo levels internally and to two of its customers This was to enable effective inventory information and efficient scheduling of delivery

Wireless system transmits industrial data
Vega's Plicsradio system allows users to sidestep obstacles like roads, railways, rivers and buildings.
Founded in 1991, Linpac is a leading UK recycler of post-use rigid plastics, especially polystyrene, polyethylene and polypropylene.
Its Environmental Agency licensed site has a capacity of 28,000Te, which is set to increase to 30,000Te in the next four years.
Customer demand and the rapid progress of environmental legislation in the packaging, automotive and electrical sectors, continue to drive expansion.
The site became accredited to generate packaging recovery notes (PRNs) under the Packaging Waste Regulations 1997.
As to its silo levels, daily updates of usage and available capacity were needed without using expensive telemetry software or telephone lines.
Vega Controls provided its Vegaflex guided microwave devices which measure the silo level, even during filling and emptying, regardless of surface angle, build up and vessel obstructions.
This is because the measuring signal is guided down and back up a cable suspended from top to bottom in the vessel.
At the back end of this level system is a Vegamet, which is not only communicating and powering the mini network of level devices, it is also connected directly to the company's Ethernet network and uses its Domino email system to send to all departments and suppliers daily level readings; these can either be embedded or attached to be used by other standard software such as an Excel spreadsheet or access database program.
This system can repay its cost by removing returned deliveries and production outages through lack of raw materials, and ending the task of personnel climbing into silos to dip manually.
This system can handle up to 15 measuring points, and is capable of data-logging, sending emails on alarm, publishing a web page and sending text messages.
The signal conditioners suit networked and remote site inventory for liquids and solids, from individual silos to large scale and tank farms.
