Virtalis offers wireless virtual reality system

A Virtalis product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Sep 30, 2008

Virtalis is offering a wireless version of Polhelmus's Patriot entry-level virtual reality machine.

The system can be used in medical research to track the movement of surgeons' hands.

The new wireless version will allow the user to move more freely.

Accurate tracking is a vital component of virtual reality.

The tracker plots a person's movements in a virtual environment in real time, giving the user a more realistic experience.

The markers on the Patriot act as transmitters and the receptors do the tracking.

By fixing the receivers and wearing the transmitters, the interference from metals is minimised.

The system is capable of tracking up to four markers for a full six degrees of freedom over larger areas.

Each marker is tracked in space by a sensor receptor that covers 2.43 metres or eight feet diameter.

The accuracy of tracking is 4mm.
