Pressure switch market changes to solid state

A Venture Development product story

Global shipments of pressure switches are expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 3.0%, reaching US $1.1 billion in 2011.

Global shipments of pressure switches are expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 3.0%, reaching US $1.1 billion in 2011, according to Venture Development Corporation's recently completed market study: "Pressure switches: global market demand analysis".

The report examined four electromechanical product types (bellows, bourdon tube, diaphragm, and piston) as well as electronic/solid-state types.

By far the highest growth rate is forecast for solid-state types.

The bellows, bourdon tube, diaphragm, and piston products rely on fundamental laws of thermodynamics and mechanics that have been well known for decades by scientists around the world.

These mature technologies generally have reached the limits in terms of improving product capabilities or in enhancing marketplace opportunities.

The overall market for these devices, which was $884.2 million in 2006, is expected to increase slowly at a 2.6% CAGR, and reach $1003.8 million in 2011.

Worse yet, even this gain is expected to result from price increases due to inflation such as for raw materials.

Global unit shipments of these electromechanical pressures switches is forecast to decline.

The major technology trend affecting the pressure switch industry is movement toward solid-state electronics - be it to pressure switches, transducers, or transmitters.

The global market for solid-state pressure switches is much smaller than the overall market for electromechanical types, but it is growing much faster.

Global shipment of these was $81.4 million in 2006, and shipments are forecast to increase at a 7.7% CAGR reaching $118.0 million in 2011.

Furthermore, most of this is expected to be in unit growth, as prices on these products are expected to increase only marginally.

On a unit basis, VDC forecasts a greater gain in global shipments of the solid-state pressure switches than decline in shipments of the electromechanical types through 2011.
