Diaphragm pumps ideal for starch

When Danisco Pack Sheet Feeding was looking to improve the delivery of starch to one of its corrugating machines, the company turned to Pumpmasters, a Verder distributor.

Danisco Pack Sheet Feeding (Scotland), in Larkhall, South Lanarkshire was looking to improve the delivery of starch to one of its corrugating machines.

Pumps which could handle the starch, a very important ingredient in the whole process, had to be incorporated into their new system.

To get further advice the company turned to Pumpmasters, a Verder distributor.

The process required starch from the storage tanks to be supplied to three feed points on the corrugating machine.

After discussion with representatives from both Verder and Pumpmasters, it was decided that the best solution was to employ Verderair air-operated diaphragm pumps.

Two Verderair VA50 cast iron pumps with santoprene diaphragms and ball valves and three VA25 polypropylene pumps with the same internals were chosen.

The VA50s supply the machine from the storage facility and the VA25s deliver the starch to the feed points.

The Verderair pumps were chosen to ensure that Danisco had a pump that was stall free and capable of starting automatically when a differential pressure was achieved at the feed points.

Material selection was also an important consideration due to the aggressive nature of starch and the presence of caustic.

A further advantage is that the VA25 1in pump and the VA50 2in pump use the same air valve components, allowing the same spares to be used with the two pump sizes.

This has helped to minimise stock inventory through standardisation.

The pumps are also quick and easy to maintain, as the air valve can be maintained in-situ without disturbing the liquid connections, reducing both costs and downtime.
