Mag drive range prevents seal failures

The need to pump solvent through a spray head in the vessel was proving difficult for a company because of repetitive seal failures.

The solvent is recycled and used several times until heavily contaminated by the product that forms a coating over the interior surface of the vessel.

Traditionally mechanically shaft sealed pumps have been employed but the particulates rapidly build up on the seal faces, causing abrasion and seal hang up, resulting in seal failure and frequent leaks.

Alex Calderbank of Liquid Plastics discussed the problem with Verder and the latest series of balanced thrust mag drive pumps was installed.

The TB series of Verder's mag drive range has a zero thrust design and incorporates a rotating filter combined with silicon carbide shaft, bearings and internal wear rings, making them resistant to abrasion and suitable for handling fluid products loaded with small solids in suspension.

The requirement was to deliver 7.2m3/h at 5bar with provision to operate the unit through an inverter speed control.

By adjusting the speed discharge pressures up to 12bar can be achieved, producing exceptional cleaning power.

Since installation, the TB50x32-200 7.5kw sealless pump has operated reliably.

Further refinements are being carried out to the system to overcome the spray head failing and requiring replacement because it cannot cope with the solids which the pump is handling.

Future installations will incorporate the leak free Verder TB series pump and a revised spray ball configuration delivering a reliable, leak-free, wash out system to Liquid Plastics' production facility.
