Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jun 20, 2008

The VTI SCA3000 is a digital three-axis accelerometer that can be used to measure acceleration, motion and inclination.

VTI Technologies supplies the sensing solution for the Adidas miCoach system.

The sensing solution uses an acceleration sensor for calculating a person's speed and distance travelled when walking or running.

There is a growing global awareness of the need of a healthy lifestyle and training aids previously used only by athletes are now becoming available for sports enthusiasts of all levels.

The miCoach is a complete training system designed to enable athletes at all levels to reach and exceed their training goals.

The system provides the user with real-time feedback and a self-adapting training schedule based on the true fitness levels achieved in the course of the exercises.

The miCoach system consists of a mobile phone developed by Samsung and a web-based training tool, heart rate belt and shoe-attachable stride sensor developed by Adidas.

Inside the stride sensor there is a low-power SCA3000 acceleration sensor supplied by VTI Technologies, which enables the calculation of the user's speed and distance during exercise.

The VTI SCA3000 is a digital three-axis accelerometer that can be used to measure acceleration, motion and inclination.

Typical applications include portable navigation devices, sports equipment and other battery-operated devices where ultra-low power consumption and high-performance are critical.
