CAD tool wraps 2D sketches around a surface

A VX Corporation product story

VX Corp has added a new function to VX CAD/CAM that wraps 2D planar sketches around a surface.

CAD applications in general have matured over the past decade to the point where they have become the designer's most important and indispensable tool.

Yet sometimes even the most ardent CAD fans wonder if their program is more of a hindrance than a help - creativity needs to be able to flow at the speed of thought, but your CAD system does not always work that way.

One of the obstacles can be the functionality at the very heart of the system - the Sketcher.

VX has designed its Sketcher to work just as others do - create a 2D shape and expand this into a 3D shape with functions like extrude, revolve and sweep.

Customers that have migrated to VX from traditional solids modelling applications appreciate the fact that VX does not force them to dimension or constrain their sketches before they can use them in 3D.

You can use your sketch as it is.

Until now a sketch was still limited to a planar 2D shape.

The VX 'wrap' command opens new creative opportunities, and simplifies the task of producing 3D curves all the way around cylindrical or conical objects.

Users can wrap a VX sketch a full 360 degrees around a face.

The resulting geometry is a set of accurate 3D curves that can be used with other modelling functions to develop compelling product shapes in less time.

Bob Fischer, VX Vice President, Sales and Marketing said: "We have developed this exciting new tool in response to requests from our industrial design customers, and I feel it exemplifies just how flexible and powerful VX CAD/CAM is".

"We are listening to our customers and exploring more ways to make the path from concept to manufacture a smooth one".
