Weighing system checks for radioactive
loads
SafeWeigh is the latest innovation from industrial weighing specialist Weightron Bilanciai and is specifically designed for the detection of radioactivity in vehicle loads.
SafeWeigh is the latest innovation from industrial weighing specialist Weightron Bilanciai, and is specifically designed for the detection of radioactivity in vehicle loads entering or leaving industrial sites As more and more materials are recycled, especially scrap metal, there is a growing need to monitor the waste material for traces of radioactivity before it is reprocessed or incinerated

Clever design cuts costs on weighbridges
A new design of weighbridge standardises the design of the end sections and uses a modular construction for the main decks, resulting in lower prices and better delivery times
If any radioactive material goes undetected then once it has been processed, the problems are multiplied many times over and the cost to dispose of contaminated material may run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.
By preventing any such material entering facilities and refusing to accept suspect vehicles, reprocessors will save these enormous costs and therefore pay back for their investment in SafeWeigh will be quickly realised.
The system already has a proven track record at steel works, incineration plants, land fill sites and waste reprocessing plants.
Weighbridges are critical control points at these operations and therefore the ideal location for monitoring radiation.
As the loaded vehicle passes through the SafeWeigh detector plates, positioned each side of the weighbridge, it is scanned for traces of radioactivity.
The system can be programmed for specific radiation thresholds and if it determines that a radioactive source is present, either in the load or the vehicle, the system actuates an alarm to immediately notify site security.
SafeWeigh provides a full radiation profile of the vehicle load and the system has been successfully integrated with Weightron's comprehensive WinWeigh software suite.
SafeWeigh can also be linked to cameras to capture vehicle identification.
