Adapter connects devices over network

A Westermo Data Communications product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 2, 2007

Westermo Data Communications' IDW-90 industrial ISDN terminal adapter is aimed at utilising existing communications technology and has been designed to meet the European ISDN standard DSS1.

Westermo Data Communications has released an industrial ISDN terminal adapter, developed to connect remote industrial measurement/monitoring devices over an existing high-speed communications network.

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is a circuit-switched telephone network system, designed to allow digital transmission of voice and data over ordinary telephone copper wires, resulting in better quality and higher speeds than available with the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).

ISDN is more prevalent than people think, with a vast number of companies having ISDN lines without them even knowing.

ISDN is preferable to PSTN not only due to the higher data rate, but also the low negotiation/connection time.

The IDW-90 is aimed at utilising this existing communications technology and has been designed to meet the European ISDN standard DSS1.

All standard ISDN transport protocols are supported including HDLC transparent, V.110 asynchronous, X75, PPP and ML-PPP.

The unit can connect a range of industrial devices that have RS-232 and RS-422/485 interfaces over long distances at high speed and with a high level of reliability.

The IDW-90 also has a single digital input and output relay.

The input and output can be used to trigger, or be triggered by a number of different user-defined events.

The relay output can be controlled from a remote Westermo modem (PSTN or ISDN).

In addition the IDW-90 also has an internal analogue V34 modem enabling connections from ISDN to analogue modem end locations.

The combination of analogue and ISDN modem and V.110 protocol support makes the IDW 90 suited for mixed environments where an ISDN connected modem can be reached from ISDN, analogue and GSM networks.

The modem also has password protection, dial-back security and caller ID answering to ensure that only authorised users can communicate with the modem and any connected equipment.

A watchdog facility continually monitors the power supply and internal hardware as well as the operational software.

In the event of a problem the modem automatically resets.

This feature has been included to make the unit more suitable for use in unmanned locations.

For ease of setup the modem is supported by the Westermo IDW-tool configuration software but also has DIP switches to assist configuration.

Drivers for Windows setup are also supplied.

The unit's power supply, ISDN, I/O and serial interface all have galvanic isolation and the Westermo DIN rail mountable housing offers industrial grade protection.
