WEG's strength and competitiveness as a worldwide supplier of high efficiency electric motors (EEF1) has been recognised by the company's appointment as a global supplier to Weir Pumps.

WEG's strength and competitiveness as a worldwide supplier of high efficiency electric motors (EEF1) has been recognised by the company's appointment as a global supplier to one of the world's premier pump manufacturers, Weir Pumps Under the new agreement WEG will provide its range of high efficiency low voltage IEC motors to meet the pumping requirements of Weir's Minerals and Clear Liquid divisions across 40 countries worldwide

"We are naturally delighted to have concluded this agreement", said David Ede, Managing Director of WEG UK.

To be appointed by a world-class manufacturer such as Weir Pumps after such an in-depth appraisal is a real indicator of WEG's strength and competitiveness in world markets.

WEG went truly international long before it became fashionable and this strategy is now paying of with recognition of our ability to provide global levels of service locally.

We are always investing to get closer to our customers (our new plant in Portugal is evidence of this) in order to ensure optimised lead times in an increasingly demanding market, and to further the growth that has already taken our global sales past the US $600 million dollar mark".

The agreement between Weir Pumps and WEG is the result of a far reaching programme undertaken by the former, aimed at maximising the value of the company's purchasing spend across nine key commodity areas.

The director in charge of the programme for the Clear Liquid Division was Fergus Henry, an executive who knows all about world-class supply chain management, having worked previously for Diageo and British Aerospace.

Commenting on the programme, Henry said that: "The basic intent in each commodity area was to conduct a global sourcing exercise to identify the most capable suppliers to meet our long term needs so that, instead of placing orders on a deal by deal, we establish long-term agreements.

This will clearly allow us to develop much stronger links with fewer suppliers".

WEG's appointment as global supplier to Weir Pumps builds on the company's recent achievement of getting its high efficiency (EEF1) motors specified as the standard on the new Isoglide HC mark III range of pumps, the latest to be introduced by WPL.

The Isoglide HC mark III is a horizontal, single stage, end suction centrifugal pump with a short overhang pump and motor shaft design that offers minimum run out.

This feature, combined with advanced wear ring materials ensures maximum pump efficiency and bearing life.

WEG worked closely with development engineers from Weir Pumps to satisfy the requirement for a special flange and shaft design on the Isoglide HC drive motors.

The result of this collaboration is a design of motor that integrates directly onto the Isoglide HC pumps, obviating the requirement for costly couplings and bell housings.
