WEG smoke extraction motors have been used by Flakt Woods in a two-year test programme that has achieved a world-first for the specialist fan manufacturer: the right to apply CE marking to its emergency high temperature (400C) smoke control fans.

The achievement by Flakt Woods anticipates the implementation of the Construction Products Directive, and the publication of an exacting new standard, EN12101-3, which will make it a mandatory requirement for all smoke control fans sold into the European Union to carry a CE mark from 1st April 2005.

The right to affix a CE mark follows successful completion of testing, auditing of factory production control, and issue of a certificate by an accredited authority.

It is a procedure intended to prevent fan failures during emergency smoke situations, where such failures can result in loss of human life.

The two-year test programme undertaken by Flakt Woods to attain the CE mark was conducted in conjunction with UK laboratory BSRIA, the world-leading authority in building research.

The success of the programme means that Flakt Woods can now offer CE marked JM Aerofoil products, driven by WEG smoke extraction motors, for use at 400C for 2h.

The WEG motors employed are F4001 classification units, certified to EN12101-3 (Smoke and heat control systems - Part 3: Specification for powered smoke and heat exhaust ventilators).

They are used in ventilation systems all over the world: in tunnels, mines, buildings, shopping malls, enclosed car parks, warehouses, stairways and theatres.

Flakt Woods is not resting on its laurels following its initial success.

The company's test programme is continuing, and the expectation is that additional CE marking will be obtained shortly from BSRIA for the JM HT range of fans - once again driven by WEG smoke extraction motors, for operation in 200 and 300C temperature categories.

The significance of these further accreditations is that, once they are achieved, Flakt Woods will be able to offer one of the most comprehensive ranges of safety-critical products for high-temperature smoke control in the European single market.

"We congratulate Flakt Woods on their achievement, which is well ahead of the rest of the market, and are delighted that they chose to go forward with WEG smoke extraction motors to achieve the CE mark", said Marek Lukaszczyk.

National Sales and Marketing Manager for WEG UK.

"We work with Flakt Woods on major projects all over the world, and the achievement of CE mark will have a major influence on customers far beyond the borders of the EEC".
