There has been a substantial growth in demand for Zone 2 luminaires for hazardous area installation according to WF Electrical.
The company is uniquely placed to comment on this market since it is the only UK electrical distributor to stock a complete range of these types of lamps and tubes.
Nobody is certain of the reasons for the growth, but the implementation of ATEX (from the French 'ATmospheres EXplosible') Directives is the most likely explanation.
ATEX places greater emphasis on the accountability of the manufacturer, supplier and installer of the products for hazardous areas.
The legislation, known as the 100a ATEX Directive (94/9/EC), was issued by the European Commission in 1994 and becomes law from 1 July 2003.
WF Electrical stocks a huge range of lamps, fluorescent tubes, floodlights and bulkhead lights that are all Zone 2 rated.
These include: Bi-Pin and standard Bi-Pin tubes, emergency standard wired Bi-Pin, ceiling, wall and pendant mounted Wellglass luminaires as well as complete range of lighting fixtures.
All of the Zone 2 lighting products are contained in a specially produced hazardous areas catalogue, which also includes Zone 1 lighting, handlamps, switches and isolators, junction boxes, plugs and sockets, trace heating and control station equipment.
Installers of lamps and lighting equipment (and other electrical and mechanical equipment) in any areas with a risk of explosion, should be diligent in fitting compliant products.
While the more obvious hazardous areas are those in petrochemical plants or offshore oil exploration, any area with the chance that a spark might set off an explosion is covered - such as paint shops, grain storage and pharmaceuticals.
