HRH The Princess Royal presented the annual WISE Awards yesterday in London in her capacity as the Royal Patron of the WISE Campaign The awards are given in recognition of companies and individuals who have actively addressed the issue of promoting science and engineering to young girls and women, and who have supported the aims of WISE

Helen Marson from Hampshire was the winner of the WISE Excellence Award 2003.

Marson was chosen as the winner from a group of dedicated finalists, and received her award, an engraved crystal bowl, plus a cheque for GBP 1500 from HRH The Princess Royal for her outstanding effort and commitment to the promotion of science and engineering to young women.

Cardiff University won the WISE Ambassador Award for their promotion of science and engineering to young women in Wales, through schemes such as taster days, a residential summer scheme and a training course for careers advisors.

Ford Motor Company won the Investor in WISE Award 2003, for its dedication and active support of the promotion of science and engineering to young women in the UK and support of women in the industry.

Martin Temple, Chairman of WISE, said: "Science, engineering and technology are vital to all of us but not enough young people are choosing this route.

In particular, much fewer girls are taking up these career opportunities.

If they did so, it would go a long way towards providing the high technology skills and innovation much needed for our economy in the future.

I am delighted that WISE wants to recognise publicly those who have actively encouraged women into the profession and who have supported the aims of WISE".
