Refurbishment is economical option
Don't replace - refurbish, is the latest trend in the power engineering industry as a means of offsetting the cost of the bigger more expensive new transformers and switchgear.
The Winder delegation met with a total of eight companies during the five-day visit, and Stacey is now planning a return visit in 2004 to build on the strong links they developed.
The decision to target Russia was taken after market research undertaken in conjunction with the DTI showed that, although the Russian economy has recently experienced good economic growth, the country needs to improve its industrial base.
And with significant regional power cuts predicted within five years, Winder believes it is well placed to work with companies to upgrade their essential equipment.
As power systems in Russia are on a different network, Winder will need to make a slight design change to any equipment manufactured - however this is nothing the company has not tackled before with equipment already supplied to sites in Iraq, Ghana and Nigeria.
Matthews was delighted with the visit, commenting: "It was a very worthwhile trip for Winder Electrical".
"We have found out more about the potential for business in Russia, and have learnt a lot about how business is conducted".
"Our next step is to appoint an agent to work on our behalf and we are confident that we can secure orders".
"The country is developing at the minute and there is a real need to improve the current infrastructure - which in turn can lead to increased business opportunities for companies like ours".
"Winder has a well earned reputation for delivering quality products designed to customers' specifications, on time and at the right price both in the UK and abroad".
"We are confident this will help us secure new business in Russia", Matthews added.
Winder already has significant experience supplying overseas having recently won a contract for supplying 20 transformers for the Middle East and last week it secured a deal to supply equipment to a customer in Ghana.
