Leeds has added another leading company to its expanding industrial portfolio with the relocation of Newton Derby, part of the MP Industries Group.

Leeds has added another leading company to its expanding industrial portfolio with the relocation of Newton Derby, part of the MP Industries Group Newton Derby, established in Derby in 1899, moves to Leeds to join another member of the group, Winder Electrical

The pair will work side-by-side at Winder's site in Stanningley.

The two engineering companies, each more than a century old, are among the leading names in the field of electrical generation.

The move is seen as a way of further strengthening the group.

As well as being a long-term supplier of high quality products to the Ministry of Defence, Newton Derby also has an extensive worldwide blue chip customer base.

It offers a full range of design, development and production services on an established range of electrical generation equipment, including those with top ranking specifications which are built for the most demanding environments.

Winder Electrical specialises in the manufacture of industrial electrical power equipment and offers a comprehensive design and build service.

Its products include transformers, special build items and LV switchgear.

Among Newton Derby's current contracts is one for the supply of variable speed alternators rated at 28kVA, which are for use on 75 railway locomotives on a major rail project.

And, as evidence of the company's high quality product, a frequency tester supplied 13 years ago for the Trident submarine test facility has just come into the workshops for its first service.

But, like Winder, it is not just in the home markets where Newton Derby is active.

It is currently working on contracts for Sweden, Finland, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands and Spain.

The move to Leeds marks the culmination of more than a century of expansion for the company which was founded as a partnership firm in 1899 operating from premises opposite the Derby's old town hall.

Various amalgamations and name changes resulted in Newton Derby coming into being in 1966.

The company quickly outgrew its original home and moved to the outskirts of Derby where is has remained - until now.

Winder Electrical's recently appointed Chief Executive Richard Asquith, who also has responsibility for the engineering interests of the MP Industries group welcomed the Newton Derby's move to the Leeds site.

"It makes eminent sense all round", he said.

"The two companies are in the same group and are engaged in the same line of work, so it is sound practice to have them operating alongside each other".

"It is a move which can only strengthen the group and one which will help both companies win fresh contracts".
