Winder Electrical has beaten off fierce competition to land a major contract for power supply work on the Scottish islands of Orkney and Shetland.

Winder Electrical has beaten off fierce competition to land a major contract for power supply work on the Scottish islands of Orkney and Shetland The GBP 300,000 deal will see the Leeds-based specialist in the manufacture of power equipment, building and supplying three reactors and one 4MVA transformers for Scottish and Southern Energy

Winder's General Manager Paul Matthews says two of the three reactors will go to the Orkneys and the other will be sited in the Shetlands.

The transformer is destined for the Orkneys.

''We had to face up to rigorous competition for this tender", said Matthews.

''We are delighted to have won it".

''We are working to a tight deadline, but we are used to that and have the workforce at Winder with the skill and expertise to ensure the order is delivered on time".

Winder will build the equipment in galvanised materials which will have a special "coastal" paint finish to ensure the transformers and reactors are not affected by harsh weather.

Engineers from the company's Stanningley base will visit each of the sites in advance to plan the transportation to the islands before the equipment heads north.

This is the third major contract Winder has won in recent months in what is a highly competitive industrial sector.

The Scottish work comes hard on the heels of a lucrative three-year deal to supply Northern Ireland Electricity with a range of power transformers.

It also follows close on the completion of a 25MVA step-up transformer to boost the electricity supply in and around Port Harcourt, Nigeria, for Negris.

Matthews commented: "To keep winning these contracts around the world is a tribute to the loyal, dedicated and skilled workforce we have assembled at Winder".

"We have been renowned over our long history for the quality of workmanship and our ability to deliver".
